Frequently Asked Questions
Is mountain biking safe?
While all sports have a certain level of risk involved, we do all we can to keep kids safe. We have safety procedures, we use established trails, and our coaches are trained in emergency procedures. All riders are required to wear helmets and follow safety instructions. Does my child need mountain biking experience?
We have riders of varying levels on the team, and we work with families to give kids every opportunity to participate. If you have questions about the suitability of our sport for your child, please contact us using the form at the bottom of this page and we'll be glad to address your concerns. What equipment does my rider need?
Every rider will need a working mountain bike in good condition. It should have knobby tires, front suspension, and disc brakes are highly recommended. The bike should fit the rider, as bikes that are too big or too small can pose a danger. We recommend a fitting and tune up at one of our local bike shops. All riders must also have a helmet, a hydration pack or water bottle, and a spare tube. We strongly recommend that every rider use eye protection and gloves. If you have questions about equipment we would be glad to advise you. We can also advise parents about connecting with local bike shops and finding good used bikes. What are the coaches' qualifications?
All of our coaches and ride leaders have training in wilderness first aid, and are seasoned riders with a great deal of experience on the trails. Our coaches are also trained at various levels of certification through organizations such as NICA and PMBIA. When and where are practices?
Practices are in the evenings, times varying depending on the time of year and available light. We usually practice at Carvins Cove and will communicate each week's time and location through TeamSnap, our online communication program. Are practices required?
It is important to participate in order to develop as a rider. However, while we encourage everyone to practice, we understand that life happens and you won't always make it. If you cannot make it to practice, you are required to notify your kid's team coach using the TeamSnap App. are practices canceled due to inclement weather?
We try to hold as many practices as possible, but we do not ride in dangerous conditions or in conditions that might cause damage to the trails. Whenever possible, we will change practice locations in response to trail conditions. We will contact you through TeamSnap and social media if there are any changes to our practices. is racing mandatory?
Racing is not mandatory. We encourage riders to challenge themselves according to their own level and family commitment. How long is the mountain biking season?
All riders practice from March until June. NICA racers continue through October. We often have informal rides, practices, and local community races throughout the year. Do I have to know how to ride for my kid to be on the team?
No, but we encourage you to try it. One of our goals is family fitness and fun, and we have a parent group that rides together during the kids' practices. Can riders play other sports while they're on the team?
Many of our riders compete in other sports. You decide your level of commitment to the sport. How much does participation cost?
Participation for 2022 is $145.00, which includes weekly practice with a skilled coach. We will have an online store open during the registration window where you can purchase jerseys, hats, shirts, etc. for an additional fee. is there financial assistance?
The answer to this depends on the situation. Please contact us using the form at the bottom of this page. how big is the team?
In order to give each child the best opportunity to learn and develop through small-group coaching, we limit our team size to about fifty riders. |
